Somewhere above Titusville, as you cruise through the 18th Century on the Indian River Lagoon, the enormous
Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral looms into view to the south. You've left the
historic First Coast and enter the futuristic Space Coast. Its biggest attraction is open every day and worth a
visit! If you happen to be in the area for a shuttle launch, your luck is wonderful and you won't want to miss
it!
Even if there's no launch, a side trip on the Banana River is sure to be a treat.
It seems that we Floridians can claim more than our share of pretty little riverside towns and those are certainly
abundant in this area. The city of Melbourne at Mile 918 is the commercial heartland of the Space Coast and very
convenient for boatmen. There are restaurants, fuel, transient dockage and an airport with jet service to almost
anywhere.
South of Melbourne you'll pass through Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge - the nation's first - established
by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. Shortly beyond there we leave the Space Coast and enter the Treasure Coast.
