OKEECHOBEE
Despite
Tropical Storm FAY's visit, the ongoing saga of Lake Okeechobee
and the Okeechobee Waterway continues...
In mid-July the Florida Water Management District said that
recent rains had improved the depths but it is still very, very
much lower than it should be.
We're repeating ALL of last month's update notices here:
Because of the newest notice below under JUNE '08 OKEECHOBEE NEWS dated 5/16 about the
temporary lock closures, we put in a call to the Clewiston USA
Corps of Engineers Southern Operations Office on Tuesday, 5/27,
about the low water restrictions. (We'd hoped maybe we'd missed
something that said water depth is improving, but, no such luck!)
Joe Warn (one of the COE Locks & Dams fellows who usually
helps on our annual FCD update) called back to let us know that
unfortunately, it's even
worse than the numbers appearing on the table below.
He asked that we remind our readers: "DON'T
FORGET TO CALL THE CLEWISTON OFFICE FOR LATEST INFORMATION BEFORE
ATTEMPTING A CROSSING!!!" That number to call:
863-983-8101.

October.
The Tarpon Springs park's

remain open but the causeway and the adjoining beach will not be

AWARD WINNING LIFE
JACKET LOANER PROGRAM FROM BOATU.S. FOUNDATION SEEKS NEW LOANER
LOCATIONS
Boating Industry Members & Boaters Please Note . . .
Would You Like to Help Kids Stay Safe on the Water? This is something you may
want to tell the folks you deal with in the boating industry as
they may not be aware of it!
ALEXANDRIA, VA, July 9, 2008 The easiest way to ensure
children's safety on the water is to make sure each wears a
properly-fitting life jacket. But childrens growth spurts
or last minute changes to the roster of invited guests dont
always make wearing a life jacket easy. Your marina, bait shop,
fuel dock or boat club may be able to help next season as the
BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is looking
for new locations to become lending sites for its free Life
Jacket Loaner Program.
Since the program was
launched in 1997, at least three childrens lives have been
saved as a result of wearing a BoatU.S. Foundation life jacket. Over 90,000 life jackets are loaned out
each year through the program, with demand up 22% in the last two
years. The program was
recently honored by the Partnership for a Safer Maryland as one
of six leading injury prevention programs in the state.
There is no cost to become a loaner site and presently over 350
clubs and businesses participate as Life Jacket Loaner Program
sites. The loaner life jacket kit consists of 12 life jackets in
a protective container, signage and easy-to-use sign-out sheets
to track usage. Various sizes of jackets are included.
To download an application to become a Life Jacket Loaner Program
site or for more information on the program and the life jacket
laws in your state, please visit http://www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/LJLP Applications will be accepted until
September 30, 2008.
If hosting a loaner site isnt for you, a tax-deductible
donation can help. The need for this program continues to
grow each year and your donation will help parents keep their
kids safe, said BoatU.S. Foundation President Ruth Wood.
Ten dollars will buy one vest-style life jacket and $250 will
create a completely new, fully stocked loaner site. Go to http:/www.BoatUS.com/Foundation to make your donation online or mail
your donation to: Kids Jackets, BoatU.S. Foundation, 880 South
Pickett St., Alexandria, VA 22304.
The BoatU.S. Foundation for
Boating Safety and Clean Water is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit education and
research organization primarily funded by the voluntary
contributions of the 650,000 members of BoatU.S. The Foundation
operates more than a dozen programs including the only
accredited, free, online general boating safety course, a
low-cost EPIRB rental program, the Help Stop the
Drops national clean fueling campaign and has awarded
hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants for nonprofit groups
for boating safety and environmental projects.

announced that their annual Kingfish

September 27th and 28th this year.
This tournament is a big one and its proceeds all go to the Leukemia Foundation. Over the last five years they've
donated $490,000! That's great for the foundation ... and no

C-Quarters, incidentally, is the home base of Millard Collins,

who've taken part in the Dockmaster Speaks feature we've been
doing in recent years. (Millard told us when his feature ran,
quite a few folks stopped by to have him autograph their FCDs!) As we mentioned in this year's
edition, dockmasters who are interested in getting into the next
feature should get in touch with us by phone or e-mail. We have
two who are already planning to take part, and there will be room
for more!

last month's update notices here:
Because of the

hoped maybe we'd missed something that said water depth is
improving, but, no such luck!)
Joe Warn (one of the COE Locks & Dams fellows who usually
helps on our annual FCD update) called back to let us know that
unfortunately, it's even
worse than the numbers appearing on the table below.
He asked that we remind our readers: "DON'T

IN-STORE LEARNING
Quite a few marine stores sponsor - mostly - free talks and
seminars (occasionally theres a small charge). Check with
the stores when youre shopping they usually have
notices posted and it's not a bad idea to call in advance
to see if there are schedule changes.
No new schedules have been received for July, but watch for
their flyers in the stores!
The USCG's Local Notice to
Mariners is available at www.navcen.uscg.gov/
Don't forget to glance back over previous months' updates
every-now-and-then to see if there's anything you've missed ...

GOOD NEWS
Blowing Our Own Horn
with Southern Boating's Help
We're happy to announce that Southern Boating Magazine
has scheduled a write-up on the new edition of our FCD in their June edition. If you're not
already a subscriber, pick it up when you see it on the newsstand
... where it should be available through the month. Your browsing
through just one issue will tend to make a full-time subscriber
out of you!
Besides the FCD, MEDIA REVIEW (page 110) covers
and suggests to SB readers William G. Crawford's history
of the construction of Florida's ICW: Florida's Big Dig: The
Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway from Jacksonville to Miami, 1881
to 1935 and Reflections on Paradise by Dan Mackin,
whose story of his journey through the Pacific and around to the
Bahamas and beyond aboard a 24' sailboat accompanies his
paintings in a beautiful, oversized coffee table book. There's
also an article on cruising New Smyrna Beach and much, much more.
OKEECHOBEE
Because of the newest notice below under JUNE '08 OKEECHOBEE NEWS dated 5/16 about the
temporary lock closures,
we put in a call to the Clewiston USA Corps of Engineers Southern
Operations Office on Tuesday, 5/27, about the low water
restrictions. (We'd hoped maybe we'd missed something that said
water depth is improving, but, no such luck!)
And, of course, you may visit the web site 24/7 at http://www.saj.usace.army.mil

NEW RIVER BRIDGE
CLOSURES AND WATERWAY RESTRICTIONS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE
Florida's Department of Transportation, the US Coast Guard and
the Astron General Contracting Company have approved repairs for
the Davie Blvd. Bridge on the New River in Ft. Lauderdale to take
place from June 1 - June 30. The project is planned as follows:
Basically, the 21' closed clearance bridge will be in the down

(Weekend projects should not interfere with river traffic;
vehicular traffic will be detoured.)
The contractor will be responsible for safe passage of all marine
vessels through the construction zone. Tow boats giving advance
notice, weather problems and emergencies will be appropriately
handled. The contact for questions is Darlene at 772-467-1124.

FWC JOINS TAKE
ME FISHING Campaign
The Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages families to enjoy fishing in
Florida this Summer and is working with the Recreational Boating & Fishing
Foundation (RBFF) and 29
other states to get the word out.
FWC's special projects coordinator, Bob Wattendorf, has said
" ... FWC is proud of Florida's recreational fishing
heritage and designation as Fishing Capital of the World."
Our state's 7700 public lakes, 12,000 miles of fishable rivers
and canals and 2276 miles of tidal shoreline present
opportunities for families to reconnect with nature and share
quality time together on the water.
Learn more about it all on the TakeMeFishing.org
web site and at MyFWC.com/fishing/5yr-2008.html where there's also information on a
five-year freshwater fishing license bonus program.
MORE ON FISHING
NEW FWC REGS & CHANGES IN EXISTING ONES ...
FWC (the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission) reminds anglers that New Gulf
Reef Fish Gear Requirements go into effect June 1.
People fishing from vessels in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida for
any reef fish species must carry and use circle hooks, dehooking
devices and venting tools. These new rules are intended to help
more Gulf reef fish survive if they must be released when they
are not legal to harvest. Reef fish, especially red snapper and
gag grouper, need protection and anglers can help maintain and
rebuild stocks by properly handling and releasing fish.
For more information about the new Gulf reef fish gear rules
visit MyFWC.com/marine.
The FWC also announces that recreational harvest
season for snook closes on June 1 in all Florida waters. It
reopens statewide on September 1.
Also from FWC, Gulf red snapper sport season reopens
in federal waters on June 1 and will close on August 5. Gulf
federal waters extend beyond nine nautical miles from shore off
Florida.
The red snapper sport harvest season opened on April 15 in Gulf
state waters and will close on November 1. Florida Gulf waters
extend from shore out to nine nautical miles.
For more on snapper sizes, limits, etc., visit MyFWC.com/marine/

LOGGERHEAD CLUB
& MARINA ANNOUNCES THEIR 11TH
Seven Kings Holdings, Inc. announces the newest addition to their
branded marina group Loggerhead Club & Marina
with the 11th site.
In May, Loggerhead Club & MarinaSt. Petersburg was
opened to the public for a total of 11 marinas and nearly 3,000
slips. The new Loggerhead is on Frenchman's Creek just minutes to
the Gulf or Tampa Bay. It replaces Nautico Yacht Club (formerly
the Huber yard) at the north end of the Skyway on Chart 20, page
141, in your FCD. The phone number has changed to
727-867-2600.
This new Loggerhead - the first on Florida's West Coast - has wet
and dry slips, Captain's Lounge with pool table, card tables and
bar, high speed ValvTect marine gas and diesel, ship's store and

available at all Loggerhead locations.
PASADENA MARINA
The former Tracy's Cove is again open, now named Pasadena Marina. You may want to pencil it in on your
Chart 20 page 141. The approximate location would be a bit to the
south and west of MarineMaxYacht Service on the north side of
Boca Ciega Bay - in the city of Pasadena, of course! The marina's
phone is 727-343-4500.
AMERICAN NAUTICAL
SERVICES
For reasons unknown, the listing for American Nautical Services
was inadvertently dropped from the Marine Stores listed in the
Classified Section of the 2008/09
FCD. The former
Miami company has been in Fort Lauderdale for some time and their
address is now 3311 South Andrews Ave., Ste. 11. That's in the
Airport 595 Business Center; phone is 954-522-3321.
Now in its 31st year, the company is still owned by Ed Hayes. The
ship's store still handles books and charts, instruments, flags
and more. Visit the web site at www.amnautical.com
for more about their many and varied products and services.
