News from USCG
Now and henceforth, we attempt to include here only notices regarding serious bridge operating schedules. We will discontinue listing temporary changes that draw attention to semi-serious delays such as (most) painting projects, marathons, charity runs, single-leaf operations, etc.
An exception to the above may be made because of seasonal traffic and items previously included may be kept w/updates.
The following two items received from USCG Miami Bridge Office - 2/14/12 via Editor/Captain John Yeager
ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY – WEST PALM BEACH TO MIAMI - LANTANA - EAST OCEAN AVENUE BRIDGE: Bridge Replacement.
GLF Construction Corporation has advised this office that the demolition and replacement of the East Ocean Avenue Bridge across the AICW, Lantana, Palm Beach County, will start on March 20, 2012 and will continue until April 16.
The first part of this activity will involve waterway closures during the removal of the existing bridge. Subsequent waterway restrictions are not anticipated until the latter part of this replacement project. Waterway closures/restrictions will be published in future Local Notices to Mariners. You can imagine that this, and the future construction, will frequently affect ICW traffic in the area. Work will be done on both causeways before the new draw bridge itself is put in place.
ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY – WEST PALM BEACH TO MIAMI - PORT OF MIAMI RAILROAD BRIDGE: Bridge Repairs.
Due to extensive repairs to the Port of Miami Railroad Bridge across the AICW , Miami-Dade County, the bridge contractor has requested closure periods and restrictive openings.
The Coast Guard is proposing to allow both the Port of Miami Railroad and Dodge Island Bridges to be closed from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Tuesday through Thursday for a two week period at the end of February or the first of March. After this period, the bridges will be allowed to remain closed during daylight hours with two openings during the day such as at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. At all other times these bridges will be left in the open to navigation position.
This work is expected to be completed in October 2012. Comments on this proposal should be sent to email@example.com

ICW traffic could re-route east around Dodge Island and west through Fishermen's Channel. If two or more cruise ships are in port, bridges will open.
The USCG has advised that this restriction is under consideration and if it is put in place, the bridges will only be closed when passage through the Port of Miami is unrestricted.

REPEATING IN MARCH.
UPDATED IN FEBRUARY 2012: ST JOHNS RIVER – FEC RAILROAD BRIDGE: Bridge Closure.
The Coast Guard HAS APPROVED THE REQUEST FROM THE OWNER of the FEC Railroad Bridge across the St Johns River mile 24.9, Jacksonville, Florida. Permission to close this bridge to navigation from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily Sunday through Thursday starting from January 15, 2012 until March 29, 2012 has been granted. The Coast Guard recognizes that this will place a burden on vessels transiting through this area during these dates and times. After review of this request with the bridge owner it has been determined that this work cannot be safely completed during nighttime operations nor would it be beneficial to reduce the amount of time allocated for this requested closure, doing so, would have the potential of extending this project an additional 4 to 6 months.
Closed clearance on this bridge is 6' per Capt. Jim Suber, City of Jacksonville's Waterways Coordinator/Dockmaster.

REPEATING IN MARCH 2012: ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY - WEST PALM BEACH TO MIAMI - JUPITER (Indiantown Road Bridge, SR 706)

REPEATING IN MARCH 2012: OKEECHOBEE WATERWAY (SOUTH FORK) ST. LUCIE CANAL - INDIAN STREET BRIDGE. Bridge Construction.
Construction on Indian Street Bridge across the south fork of the St. Lucie Canal has started on a portion of the bridge that crosses the St. Lucie Lagoon. This portion of the work is expected to continue through April 2012.
In October, 2011, the contractor began placing a temporary trestle in the vicinity of the (South Fork) St. Lucie Canal. This is not expected to impact the main navigational channel. There will also be a crane barge in the area that may restrict a small portion of the channel. The contractor will be placing beams on a barge which will be used for the main portions of the new bridge. During the time that the beams are on the barge and the crane places the new beam onto the bridge, the channel will be closed to navigation for safety reasons. The exact schedule for this operation will be published in future Local Notice to Mariners.
